Research:
PROPAGATION: HORMONE EFFECTS ON SEED (04RP_03)

Study Plan: A study of various Trillium species germination when treated with various hormones (Cytokinins, IBA, GA-3).

Objective 1: Conduct experiments to demonstrate any short term and long term effects(benefits or detrements) when seed is treated with various hormones (Cytokinins, IBA, GA-3).

Study Findings: (In Process).
- Pictures 1-17 (summer 2005) illustrate several test in process.

-Pictures 20-22 show some seeds growth(22 oct 2005) for Trillium reliquum experiment for test started on 12 July 2005. Pictures 24-25 show progress 0n 9 Nov 2005.

Scientific Name: Trillium Reliquum
Common Name(s): Fragrant White Toadshade
Location: SE USA
Description: Test shows 2 containers (1 treated, 1 control) to see the effects of GA-3 on Trillium Reliquum seed. Both were H2O2 treated seed with arils removed. Seed were soaked in 500ppm GA-3 solution overnight and placed on paper towel (also soaked with 500ppm GA-3 solution). Control container seed was H2O2 treated and placed on paper towel soaked with H2O.

Scientific Name: Trillium Reliquum (Ga-3 treated)
Common Name(s): Fragrant White Toadshade
Location: SE USA
Description: Picture shows seed germination progress on 9 Nov 2005.
Seed test commenced on 12 July 2005. Seeds were cleaned and H2O2 treated and soaked in 500ppm Ga-3 solution, then placed on damp towel (also wet with additional Ga-3 solution) in a 9X9 inch plastic container in a 70deg F. environment. Only differences between this and the Control was the Ga-3 application and the additional moisture due to the Ga-3 solution added to the paper towel. Note: long primary root at this stage.

Scientific Name: Trillium Reliquum (not Ga-3 treated)
Common Name(s): Fragrant White Toadshade
Location: SE USA
Description: Picture shows seed germination progress on 9 Nov 2005.
Seed test commenced on 12 July 2005. Seeds were cleaned and H2O2 treated, then placed on damp towel in a 9X9 inch plastic container in a 70deg F. environment. This test was used as a Control for the Ga-3 experiment. Note: primary root not long at this stage.

Scientific Name: Trillium Flexipes (Cytokinins treated)
Common Name(s): Bent Trillium
Location: SE USA
Description: Picture on left shows seed germination progress on 22 Nov 2005.
Seed test commenced on July 2004. Seeds were cleaned and H2O2 treated, then soaked in a Cytokinins solution and planted in an outside seedbed with a sand/ leaf mulch/perilite mix and Note: seed germinated and had blade leaves in spring 2005. Note primary root length. Photo #6 above shows seed bed in spring 2005 with blade leaves.
